Cloudera Installation Guide
This guide provides instructions for installing Cloudera software.
You can install:
- Cloudera Manager, CDH, and other managed services in a Cloudera Manager deployment. This is the recommended method for installing CDH and managed services.
- CDH without Cloudera Manager, in an unmanaged deployment.

Cloudera Manager Deployment
A Cloudera Manager deployment consists of the following software components:
- Oracle JDK
- Cloudera Manager Server and Agent packages
- Supporting databases
- CDH and other managed services
There are two general deployment scenarios for Cloudera Manager:
- Production deployment - For production installations, you must first install the
Oracle JDK and Cloudera Manager Server packages on the Cloudera Manager Server host. You must also manually install and configure a production database for Cloudera Manager Server and other services. Cloudera Manager can then continue the installation on the remaining cluster hosts.
In order for Cloudera Manager to automate installation of Cloudera Manager Agent packages or CDH and managed service software, cluster hosts must satisfy the following requirements:
- The Cloudera Manager Server host must have uniform SSH access on the same port to all hosts. For more information, see CDH and Cloudera Manager Networking and Security Requirements.
- All hosts must have access to standard package repositories for the operating system and either archive.cloudera.com or a local repository with the required installation files.
Note: Cloudera does not support CDH cluster deployments using hosts in Docker containers. - Demonstration and proof of concept deployments - For non-production
installations, such as for demonstration and proof of concept purposes, Cloudera Manager automates the installation of
the Oracle JDK, Cloudera Manager Server, an embedded PostgreSQL database, Cloudera Manager Agent, CDH, and other managed services on cluster hosts. Cloudera Manager also configures databases for the
Cloudera Manager Server and Hive Metastore and optionally for Cloudera Management Service roles. This path is recommended for demonstration, testing, and proof-of-concept deployments, but is
not recommended for production deployments because its not intended to scale and may require database migration as your cluster grows. To use this method, server and cluster
hosts must satisfy the following requirements:
- You must be able to log in to the Cloudera Manager Server host using the root user account or an account that has passwordless sudo privileges.
Unmanaged Deployment
In an deployment not managed by Cloudera Manager, you are responsible for installing, configuring, and managing CDH and other services. Cloudera strongly recommends using Cloudera Manager, which simplifies the installation, configuration, and maintenance of CDH and other services.
If you choose not to use Cloudera Manager, see Installing and Deploying CDH Using the Command Line for detailed instructions.
